The Mississippi River
The mighty Mississippi River is the third largest watershed in the world, starting at Lake Itasca in Northern Minnesota and winding some 2,340 miles before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico not far from New Orleans. Historically home to over a dozen Native American tribes who lived near its banks, the Mississippi river has been both a vital transportation artery and a fertile agricultural region throughout the entire history of North America, up to and including the United States. Taiwan
As China continues to increase its global power and influence, it is becoming a potential threat to the island of Taiwan. Over centuries, various powers have claimed control of Taiwan, including the Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese and Chinese. In 1949, with the victory of Mao’s Chinese Communist Party, US-supported Chiang Kai-Shek and his KMT Party fled China to Taiwan, where the US provided ongoing military protection. First settled by Polynesian sailors 1000 years ago, the Hawaiian Islands developed a unique culture that flourished in relative isolation for centuries. British explorer James Cook’s landing in 1778 put the Islands on a path to colonization and eventual incorporation in to the Unites States when Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. Hawaii has most recently been in the news with erupting volcanoes and devastating wildfires. Join Active Minds as we explore the history and culture of the United States’ Pacific paradise.

There is evidence that humans have been skiing as far back as 6300 BCE. Skiing has been a means of transportation, utilized in combat, enjoyed for recreation, and an international competitive sport. We will also discuss the emergence of Colorado towns as ski resorts and how that impacted them.

The South China Sea is an incredibly strategic body of water located between China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. At stake is one of the busiest trade routes in the world as well as oil and fishing rights. Recently China has been pressing its claim to long disputed parts of the South China Sea, raising concerns as to what may happen as tensions rise. Join Active Minds for a closer look at this delicate situation.

Tensions between North Korea, the United States, and much of the East Asian region are longstanding with no clear path for resolution. Music and Politics: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Soviet Union
Dmitri Shostakovich has been regarded as the “official” Soviet composer. With music ranging from the quirky avant-garde to elegiac or brooding, his many symphonies, chamber and other works demonstrate remarkable stylistic shifts. His musical flexibility was often in response to political pressures and crises, as he both feared Soviet censors and was rewarded by them.
